Colin’s Monster First Draft Update

Its’s about 5:40 on a Saturday morning when I’m writing this. Today is the 22nd of September. I’ve been staying on track with the first draft of Colin’s Monster – The Horde. In fact, even thought I haven’t written a word this morning (yet), if I only finish the scene I’m in the middle of, I’ll be on pace. My goal has been three scenes a day and I’ve actually been a few scenes ahead for the last several days. Continue reading »


It Has Begun

I’ve been a real slacker about blog entries lately. But there’s a good reason.

I was wrapping my prep work for Colin’s Monster – Book 1 – The Horde. This past Saturday, I began writing it. It was about 90 scenes so my goal is to write three scenes a day. In case you’re bad with math (or need coffee), that means I should complete the first draft by month’s end. I’m five and a half days in and have covered over 20,000 words so that’s not a bad start.

Wish me luck. And I’ll see you in a secluded valley in Halle.



The Power of Possibility

I wrote recently about the challenges I was facing in the world building portion of creating my novel, Colin’s Monster – The Horde. It has seemed like such an overwhelming task because, as experienced fantasy and sci-fi authors will already know, world building involves not just the story of a few characters but the story of the universe in which the characters’ stories take place. This from the department of irony…

Colin’s Monster – The Horde is the first book in a mid-grade/YA fantasy series I’m writing with my own sons in mind. The plot is mapped out pretty well. Characters are developed (in my mind). The story and scenes are solid. The overarching theme is strong and extendable. But now I’ve come to what I suspect will be the hard part for me: building the story world. Continue reading »
